One star in the wrong place, and the whole reading is wrong

The chart is the foundation of every reading. If the foundation is off, everything after it — personality, career, the annual outlook — is built on a wrong chart, and the error is invisible, because the chart still looks perfectly convincing.

Plenty of online tools — and asking a general-purpose AI to "cast me a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart" — end up with star placements that are essentially made up. Set the Life palace first, then place each star by the classical method

The system first converts your birth time into the lunar date and the two-hour period, determines the Five-Element bureau and the position of the Life palace, then places the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star systems and the remaining major stars in order. Next it derives the supporting stars, challenging stars, minor stars and each group of spirit stars, and finally lands the Four Transformations onto their corresponding stars based on the birth-year heavenly stem.

The whole process is table lookup and derivation; not a single star is generated by a language model. At Wofu, the AI only reads the chart and writes it up in words — it never touches the casting step at all.

What's actually on a chart

It's not just the 14 major stars. A complete chart is several layers of information stacked together, and every missing layer is one less basis for the reading.

12 palaces and palace stems: Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents — each palace is marked with its palace stem, the starting point for flying transformations.

14 major stars and their brightness: Zi Wei, Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong, Lian Zhen, Tian Fu, Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Qi Sha and Po Jun — each marked with its brightness level (temple, prosperous, gain, benefit, even, ground or fallen).

The real difficulty in casting a chart isn't the normal cases but the edges: whether a birth after 11pm counts as today or tomorrow, how to handle a lunar leap month, where to draw the year boundary between the solar and lunar calendars, and whether the calendar data still holds up for very early years. Handle any of these differently and the whole chart lands in different palaces.

The palaces re-count from that layer's Life palace, and the Four Transformations switch to that layer's own set.

This step is the key one — where this year's Life palace sits over your natal chart is exactly where reading your fortune begins, and you can only see it once the two layers are stacked.

You don't need to read Chinese to read this chart

The chart supports Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. Chinese, Japanese and Korean keep the traditional vertical layout; English and Vietnamese switch to a horizontal one, with star names rendered as romanized spellings (for example Zi Wei in English, Thất Sát in Vietnamese) and palace names translated too.

The four transformation marks — Lu, Quan, Ke and Ji — are kept in their original characters rather than translated; they're the special notation of Zi Wei Dou Shu, and rendering them as anything else just makes them harder to read.

How many stars does a chart place in total?

The 14 major stars are just the top layer. If you're born after 11pm, does it count as today or tomorrow?

This is where charts most often go wrong. After 23:00 falls in the late Zi hour, so the date rolls over to the next day; between 0:00 and 1:00 is the early Zi hour, and the date stays the same. Wofu turns both the early and late Zi hour into fixed verification charts, and every change to the casting code has to pass them before it can ship.

If you were born abroad, do you need to convert to Taiwan time first?

No — just enter the time shown on the clock at your birthplace. Zi Wei Dou Shu reads the two-hour period from the local twelve periods at the place of birth and does no time-zone normalization; converting it yourself will only get the period wrong.

Can the free chart show the Major Cycle and annual outlook?

Can I cast a chart if I only know my rough birth time?

Yes, but the two-hour period directly affects the Life palace and the placement of most palaces, and being off by one period can change the whole chart. It's best to confirm with family or your birth certificate; if you really aren't sure, cast a trial chart with the closest period and treat the reading as broad guidance.

Should I use the solar (Gregorian) calendar or the lunar calendar?

Either works — the system converts automatically; you just need to pick the right calendar type. Special cases like leap months, year boundaries and the early and late Zi hour are all handled correctly.

Can I save or share a chart once it's cast?

The two-hour period sets the position of the Life palace and, with it, the placement of most palaces — off by one period, and the whole chart can belong to someone else. Before casting, it's worth confirming the hour with family or your birth certificate.
